Study Permits
The Government of Canada, in collaboration with Canada’s provinces and post-secondary institutions, has adapted its legislation and public policies to ensure Canada remains an attractive destination to those seeking effective post-secondary education in a global, knowledge-based, and multicultural society.

We encourage you to take advantage of these invaluable incentives and consider Canada as your number one destination to pursue post-secondary education. The following are some of the many reasons to choose Canada as your destination to pursue post-secondary studies.

  • one of the best places in the world to live, according to the UN;
  • first-rate education system with high standards;
  • over 90 universities and 150 colleges and technical institutes to choose from;
  • more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in English or French to choose from;
  • possibility of studying in one of the hundreds of available cooperative work programs;
  • possibility of applying for off-campus work permit while studying at a post-secondary institution;
  • possibility of applying for post-graduation work permit upon graduation from a post-secondary institution;
  • possibility of gaining valuable Canadian work experience;
  • possibility of applying for permanent residence in Canada upon your graduation.

Young Students Heading to Class
Most foreign students are required to obtain a Study Permit before they can engage in a course of study in Canada. However, there are some exceptions and a study permit is not always required in order to study in Canada. Pursuant to section 188 of the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, for example, if a course of study is complete by itself and does not exceed six months, a study permit is not required.

It is also important to note that only foreign students holding study permits will be eligible to work on the campus of the university or college at which they are full-time students. For further information regarding the procedures and requirements for applying for a Study Permit to study in any of the provinces of Canada, including Québec, please contact our office.
